Poured concrete is cheaper on day one. That is the whole of its argument, and in Tampa Bay it is usually the more expensive choice by year five.
We build both. We install far more pavers, and this is the honest reason why.
What a paver patio actually costs here
Most residential paver patios we build in Pasco and Hillsborough land between $18 and $30 per square foot installed, which puts a genuinely usable 16 by 20 patio somewhere in the $6,000 to $9,500 range. The spread is not the pavers themselves. It is what is underneath and around them:
- Base preparation. Florida sand moves. A patio built on four inches of properly compacted base outlives one built on two, and you cannot see the difference until the day you can see it very clearly.
- Drainage. If water currently sits where the patio is going, that gets solved first or the patio becomes an expensive birdbath. See our irrigation and drainage work.
- Edge restraint and joint sand. The unglamorous parts that decide whether the border creeps apart in three years.
- Access. A backyard a machine can reach costs less than one where every paver arrives by wheelbarrow.
Anyone quoting a flat per-foot number without walking the property is guessing at the three items that actually move the price.
How long it takes
A straightforward patio is three to five working days on site. Bigger projects with a seat wall, a firepit, or steps run one to two weeks. Add a few days if we are correcting drainage first, which is common and worth it.
The part homeowners underestimate is the front half: design, material selection, and permitting where it applies. Start a project in early September and you are comfortably using it by the holidays. Start in November and you are watching it get built through the nicest weather of the year.
Why pavers beat poured concrete in Florida
They move without cracking. Our soil shifts and our water table rises. A concrete slab is one rigid piece, so when the ground moves the slab cracks, and a cracked slab is a replacement rather than a repair. A paver field is hundreds of small pieces with joints designed to absorb exactly that movement.
They can be repaired. A tree root, a settled corner, a stain from a dropped grill: we lift the affected pavers, fix what is underneath, and reset the same pavers. The repair disappears. The equivalent concrete repair is a visible patch forever.
They handle water better. Joints let rain through instead of sheeting it toward your foundation, which matters in a place that can deliver three inches in an afternoon.
They stay cooler. Lighter pavers on a July afternoon are the difference between a patio people use barefoot and one they cross quickly.
Utilities stay accessible. When an irrigation line or a conduit needs attention under a paver patio, we lift and reset. Under concrete, we break it.
Where concrete still wins
We will tell you when it does. Long straight driveways where the budget is tight, utility pads, and pool decks already surrounded by matching concrete are all reasonable cases. What we will not do is pour a slab over a drainage problem and call it solved.
Getting it right in Tampa Bay specifically
Three things we watch for that a national guide will not tell you:
- Slope away from the house, always. A patio graded even slightly toward the foundation is a problem you will spend years chasing.
- Plan for the oaks. Roots do not stop for hardscape. We route around mature root systems rather than cutting through them, which keeps both the tree and the patio alive. Our tree services team walks most hardscape jobs with the designer for this reason.
- Think about dusk. A patio without lighting is used for about two hours a day. Wiring for outdoor lighting during the build costs a fraction of retrofitting later.
What working with us looks like
We are a design-build company, so the person who designs the patio is accountable for the crew that installs it. Plant material comes from our own 20-acre nursery in Odessa, which means the plantings that frame the patio arrive acclimated instead of shipped in from another climate.
We have been doing this in Tampa Bay for more than 25 years, and we are a certified woman-owned business. See more of our hardscape and construction work, or schedule a free estimate and we will walk your property, tell you honestly whether pavers or concrete is the better call, and price it against what is actually under the ground.
