The rules differ by county and by city. Pinellas County and most of its municipalities regulate the removal of protected trees, and Pasco County has a tree ordinance of its own. Applications commonly require a written assessment from a certified arborist explaining why a tree is hazardous, diseased or in decline. We prepare that assessment and handle the permit as part of the job, so you are not learning the ordinance the hard way.
The trees differ too. Live oaks and laurel oaks under laurel wilt pressure, sabal and queen palms, pines on the Pasco sand, mangroves along the Pinellas waterfront. An arborist who works here every week reads them differently than one who does not.

Most trees that fail in a storm gave warning. Call before the season does it for you if you see any of these: a trunk that leans a little more each year with the soil lifting on one side, dead limbs over a roofline or driveway, mushrooms or conks growing at the base, a canopy so dense the wind cannot pass through it, or a large limb with a tight V-shaped union.
Call, too, before you build. A patio, a pool or an addition inside a mature oak's root zone can kill the tree two years later, long after the contractor is gone. Root zone protection during construction costs a fraction of a removal.
And call when someone else has already told you the tree has to come down. A second opinion from a certified arborist is often the difference between a removal and a pruning.
