The first week of September is when the phone starts ringing about lighting, and it is not a coincidence. Sunset in Tampa Bay moves from about 8:20 in mid July to a little after 7:00 by early October. Suddenly the patio people built in spring is dark by the time anybody sits down on it.
Here is what landscape lighting actually costs here, what it does beyond looking nice, and why fall is when people notice they need it.
What it costs in Tampa Bay
Most residential projects we install land between $2,500 and $7,500. The range is wide because lighting is priced per fixture and per run, not per square foot:
- A focused first phase, six to ten fixtures covering the front entry, the walkway and one specimen tree, usually runs $2,500 to $4,000 installed.
- A whole-property design, twenty or more fixtures across the front, the back, the patio and the pool area, runs $6,000 to $12,000 or even more depending on the size of the property.
- Transformer and wire are a real part of the number and the part people forget. Undersizing the transformer to save a few hundred dollars is how a system ends up dim at the far end three years later when somebody adds fixtures.
We install low-voltage LED almost exclusively. The lamps last years rather than seasons, and the whole system costs a few dollars a month to run.
What it actually does
It adds hours to a space you already paid for. This is the real argument. A paver patio without lighting gets used until dusk. With lighting it gets used all evening, most of the year, in a climate where the evening is the best part of the day for eight months.
It makes a house safer. Steps, grade changes and the edge of a driveway are where people fall. Path lighting is cheap insurance on all three.
It deters the opportunist. A dark side yard is an invitation. A lit one is not.
It is the only improvement your neighbors see at night. Curb appeal is usually discussed as a daytime idea. Half the time anyone drives past your house, it is dark.
The mistakes we get called to fix
Too many fixtures, all the same. A row of identical path lights every six feet reads as a runway. Good lighting is uneven on purpose: a few things lit well, and shadow in between.
Uplighting everything. Wash one or two real specimens, a live oak or a mature palm, and leave the rest. When everything is lit, nothing stands out.
Fixtures aimed at eye level. If you can see the bulb from the patio chair, it is aimed wrong. You should see the light, not the source.
Solar stakes as a strategy. Fine as a stopgap. They dim through the evening, they fail unevenly, and in a Florida summer they spend half the week under cloud cover.
Why fall is the right time
Three reasons, in order of how much they matter:
- You will actually use it. October through May is when Tampa Bay evenings are worth being outside for. Installing in September means the whole good season is in front of you.
- The trees are where they will be. We aim uplights around a canopy. Doing it after the summer growth flush means the aiming is right for the year ahead. If a tree needs work first, our tree services team handles that before the electrician gets there.
- Crews have room. Spring is the crush. Fall schedules are open, which means a shorter wait between the estimate and the install.
Doing it as part of something bigger
The cheapest time to wire for lighting is while the ground is already open. If a patio, a walkway or a planting bed is going in, running the sleeve then costs a fraction of trenching later.
