Most people picture landscaping as a backyard, a designer, a crew and a before-and-after. Commercial grounds work at a resort is a different job, and we do not think enough people know what it actually involves. So here is a morning on one of our commercial maintenance accounts, a golf resort in Palm Harbor, with the photos to go with it.
It starts with a plan on paper
Two of our crew, standing at a median bed with a printed planting plan, deciding which shrub goes where before a single pot comes off the trailer. That is not for show. On a property with dozens of beds, entrances, medians and building fronts, the plan is what keeps the work consistent from one visit to the next and from one crew member to the next. The person who designed it and the crew installing it are the same company, so when something on the ground does not match the drawing, it gets decided right there, not two phone calls later.
What went in
This visit was a planting refresh across several beds:
- Crotons along the walkways under the pines, where the shade and the root competition mean you want something that holds its color without needing full sun.
- Flowering shrubs in the curbed island beds and along the road edges, laid out pot by pot before planting so the spacing reads right from a car, not just from a foot away.
- The entrance feature, a raised bed with an urn fountain, bromeliads and crotons behind a stone wall. On a resort the entrance is the one bed every guest sees twice a day, so it gets the most attention and the most frequent refresh.
Every plant came from our own nursery in Odessa. That matters more on commercial work than people realize: when a bed needs 40 matching shrubs at the same size and the same health on the same morning, a wholesaler's truck is a gamble and a nursery you own is not.
The equipment is the other half
Our wrapped dump truck on the resort road, a utility vehicle loaded with crotons, a trailer of shrubs, and a crew in orange working around guests and golf carts without stopping either. Commercial grounds work is as much logistics as horticulture. You are working on a property that is open, occupied and expensive to disrupt, so the crew's job is to be visible enough to be safe and invisible enough that nobody's morning changes.
The same property, the trees
On the same visit our arborist walked the pines. Resort properties in Pinellas tend to carry a lot of mature slash pine, and mature pine in sandy soil is exactly the tree that goes over in a September storm when the root plate lifts. Part of a maintenance contract, done properly, is having a certified arborist look at those trees before the season does. Trimming a hazard in July is a line item. Removing it off a roof in October is a very different invoice.
New construction is a different rhythm
We also maintain grounds for a builder's model-home community, and it is the opposite problem. Everything is new: fresh sod that needs the first-month watering discipline, staked magnolias and pines that need their guys checked after every wind event, foundation beds that are still filling in. The crew's job there is string-trimming edges so the models look finished on a Saturday morning and mowing between young trees without touching a single stake. Different property, same standard: one plan, one crew, no surprises.
What a commercial account actually gets
Since this is the question we get asked most, in plain terms:
- A named team that knows the property, not whoever is free that day.
- A planting plan that carries from visit to visit, so refreshes build on each other instead of starting over.
- Our own nursery stock, matched and healthy on the day, at scale.
- Tree care led by an ISA Certified Arborist, including hazard assessments before storm season and storm response after it.
- Our own equipment: trucks, chippers, loaders, crane access. Nothing subcontracted at the moment you need it most.
We are a certified woman-owned business, 25 years in Tampa Bay, and we hold commercial landscaping and municipal accounts across Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough.
